Could Changes to Playoff Hoops Be A Good Thing In WV?

After regional co finals across the mountain state we had a few thoughts on some changes we would love to see. Now we know some won’t like this and that will be ok, but state tournament week we should see the top 8 schools from each class competing in Charleston for a championship no matter region.

When you have a regional co final game it should be a close game from start to finish. One of the toughest games you play all season. We shouldn’t see games won by 20+ in most regional final wins.

Why not have playoffs in boys and girls basketball look like playoffs in football? Your top 16 teams get into the post season, your higher 8 seeds would host a playoff game which would be your regional final game, and your top 8 teams would punch their ticket to Charleston.

Isn’t the goal to have your best 8 teams competing in Charleston for a state championship? Over the years we have seen 30 point wins, 40 point wins and also a 50 point win in the first round of the state tournament. That should never be the case in a state quarterfinal game on one of the biggest stages for high school basketball in WV.

At the end of the day where you are located in the state shouldn’t matter. The best teams should be fighting it out in each class for their chance to play in Charleston.

We know it is very unlikely that any change will come, but it has been on our mind for a few years, and by no means do we think that would be the perfect solution. We do think it would be something to think about and maybe make the post season just a little bit better.
